The
Professional Speaker Manual, Project 1 - The Keynote Address
12 November 1989, it was my wedding dinner, my husband and I walked up the stage, the MC interviewed my husband, poked fun on him, and he turned to me, and asked if I would like to say a few words, I just stood at the side of the rostrum and shaking my head with smile… Ladies and Gentlemen, though I can forgive my husband and MC for not informing me earlier of the impromptu speech, I can never forget how embarrass I was at that moment...
1977, I entered NUS studied Architecture. Building Project presentation was the major subject that determined the live and death oops I meant if you Pass or Fail, it was unlike the other courses depending on exam papers, I had difficulty presenting my design concept, philosophy and functionalism... I didn’t do well, I repeated the 3rd year, and it took me 6 years to be a bachelor of Architecture…
If I was a Toastmaster, I would have grabbed the Microphone and moved to the centre of the stage and started talking on my wedding dinner. Yes, Toastmasters you can make a difference.
If I was a Toastmaster, I would have passed my Bachelor of Architectural with flying colours results… Yes, Toastmasters you can make a difference.
Fellow Toastmasters and Guests, I am delighted to be here this evening and I am excited to introduce you an excellence product of Toastmasters, that is Me! I am the keynote speaker at this special occasion, a true fact that I had never dreamt about.
Congratulations to Toa Payoh Central CC TMC for 15 years of remarkable growth — growth in membership, vision, effectiveness, and credibility. Congratulations of 15 years of good work!
In Toastmasters, we make the world a better place by helping 280,000 members around the world to becoming more capable of communicating and leading. Toastmasters International founded in 1924 by Dr Ralph Smedley. Her Vision: To empower people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. Through our member clubs, people throughout the world can improve their communication and leadership skills, and find the courage to change, and make difference in others' lives.
I joined the club in 1999, 2 months before the club turned 1 year old, I am enormously proud to see what the club has become. We have come a long way to make a difference for our club and members and I am sure, our club will continue to shine in District 80, we had nurtured 7 Area Governors, 3 Division Governors for the past 15 years… Our members had expanded that we split our club into 2 clubs in 2010, 1 Basic and 1 Advanced clubs, we meet under the same roof, with same Toastmasters Mission, and 2 clubs Exco are meeting quarterly. Isn’t it amazing!
TPCCC TMC is a marvelous example of what Toastmasters is all about. With the club, I worked with many wonderful people; I see the amazing changes of how Toastmasters can Make A Difference.
I would like to share the 3 other excellence products of our club…
Karen Chua, ex-TPCCC member, who joined us in 2009 she has always been seen as a shy, timid lady, and lack of confidence. She fearfully accepted my invitation as the Test Speaker at ERA TMC Speech Evaluation Contest, she told me she spoke with lots of butterflies in her belly. She joined Cairnhill Mandarin TMC as chartered member in 2010, and she is now the Club President of Cairnhill Mandarin TMC, found her husband who is IPP of the club, she used all the skills she learnt in Toastmasters on her wedding day, that made me jealous! She spoke with emotion and sincerity when mentioned about the love of her mother, she used vocal variety and body language when talking about her husband; love to mention, she helped to charter Chui Huay Lim Mandarin TMC, she is my inspiration. Yes, Toastmasters you can make a difference.
Mei
Siew, she is sitting right in front, she joined us in 2006, though
till today she is still a CC, with her improvement of Communication
Skill and she found an ex-pilot boyfriend, she is now volunteer
without fear to do Project Evaluation, and coming forward to be the
OC of our upcoming contests, and more, today she started presenting
her Advanced Project. Yes, Toastmasters you can make a
difference. Edwin Tan, our TPCCC Basic Club President, he joined in 2007, he has completed all Exco position last 5 years, He was once a little shy boy, and now our Club President with full of confidence, taking part at Area Contest and a Great Leader for our club. He knows, to be a successful leader, you must connect with our members, and he has initiated many Dinner Gathering Session outside the club meetings. Yes, Toastmasters you can make a difference.
For the past 15 years, I served in all Exco position, was AG, Div G, also District Secretary, I was also the Organizing Chair for District 80 First Achievers’ Day in 2004, Division D 10th Anniversary in 2005, and District 80 Convention in 2008 at the Singapore most prestigious Suntec City Convention Hall with 450 delegates. I chartered 2 clubs, Nee Soon South TMC and Cairnhill Mandarin TMC, and also mentor for many District Officers.
I know from experience that every individual can make a difference in whatever cause you choose to engage. The key is to make a conscious choice to get involved and then do it. I was fortunate to be in the right place, Toastmasters. I have never looked back to question my choices. I know where I came from, and how I started.
With all the Toastmasters experience, I am not just be trained as a better leader, I have also improved "tremendously" in my speaking skills, my greatest achievement to-date, I have won the 1st place in International Speech Contest at both English and Mandarin.
Yes, Toastmasters you can make a difference.
A young man wished to marry the farmer's beautiful daughter. He went to the farmer to ask his permission. The farmer looked him over and said,
"Son, go stand out in that field. I'm going to release three bulls, one at a time. If you can catch the tail of any one of the three bulls, you can marry my daughter."
The young man stood in the pasture awaiting the first bull.
The barn door opened and out ran the biggest, meanest-looking bull he had ever seen. He decided that one of the next bulls had to be a better choice than this one, so he ran over to the side and let the bull pass through the pasture out the back gate.
The barn door opened again. Unbelievable. He had never seen anything so big and fierce in his life. It stood pawing the ground, grunting, slinging slobber as it eyed him. Whatever the next bull was like, it had to be a better choice than this one. He ran to the fence and let the bull pass through the pasture, out the back gate.
The door opened a third time. A smile came across his face. This was the weakest, scrawniest little bull he had ever seen. This one was his bull. As the bull came running by, he positioned himself just right and jumped at just the exact moment. He grabbed... but the bull had no tail!
Life is full of opportunities. Some will be easy to take advantage of, some will be difficult. But once we let them pass (often in hopes of something better), those opportunities may never again be available.
So always grab the first opportunity. Seize the Opportunity! Do your Project 1, Ice Breaker, start your first Advanced Project, as 1st time Evaluator to learn by observing and analyzing others, take part in contest presenting your first Contest speech, step out of comfort zone by having your 1st external club visit, volunteer yourself to hold appointment at the meeting, come forward to do your 1st Table Topics… our Club Exco Officers election is coming, take up 1st Exco position by serving our members. Yes, Toastmasters you can make a difference.
The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
Let’s share the benefit of being a Toastmaster with your friends, your families, your colleagues and all the people around you.
Let’s provide many people with the opportunity to participate in Toastmasters and improve them. Toastmasters International provides us with very well structured Educational Programme, to prepare us and help us to Make a Difference. Yes, Toastmasters you can make a difference.
Thank you for having me here!
My Speech Evaluator: Matthew Martin CC
